Exclusive Photos: Route 17 Shut Down After Tractor-Trailer Yanks Down Wires In Ramsey

In one of the most frustrating of coincidences, Route 17 on Friday afternoon was closed in both directions again after a tractor-trailer got tangled in utility wires in Ramsey -- dangling them over the highway and requiring that poles be replaced like they were during a traffic nightmare two weeks ago.

Route 17 was clear of civilian traffic for miles late Friday afternoon.

The UPS rig was pulling out of the northbound side's Quick Chek when it snagged the wires, closing the highway in both directions from Allendale Road to Lake Street, responders said.

Like last time, the utility poles will have to be replaced.

That means:

  • Northbound Route 17 would remain closed indefinitely;
  • Southbound Route 17 could temporarily have a single lane open.

It's in the same spot that downed lines closed the road for more than 14 hours earlier this month. It even happened in the same general time period -- around 2:45 p.m. this time.

It was less than two weeks ago that a utility pole a short distance away "just snapped on its own," a responder told Daily Voice -- beginning a rush-hour nightmare that became an hours-long headache after the wires were strewn across the highway.

SEE: Route 17 in Saddle River finally reopened around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, more than 14 hours after utility lines fell across the roadway, closing it.
